This is a 406 MHz emergency beacon. U.S. federal regulations require it to be registered with NOAA before use — and it is free.
Register online at beaconregistration.noaa.gov (fastest method). Registration links your beacon's unique ID to you, your vessel, and your emergency contacts, so the Coast Guard and search-and-rescue teams can respond faster if it is ever activated.

The Ocean Signal rescueME PLB1 is the world's most compact personal locator beacon, engineered and manufactured in the UK. One-handed operation is possible even in harsh conditions thanks to a spring-loaded protective flap over the activation button and a retractable antenna that deploys with a gentle pull. An integrated ultra-bright strobe light maximizes your visibility to rescuers, while the built-in 66-channel GPS receiver delivers rapid, accurate position data. The PLB1 transmits your position and unique ID over the government-funded Cospas-Sarsat satellite network — the only internationally recognized dedicated search-and-rescue system — at no subscription cost. A rescue coordination center receives the alert and directs the nearest response teams to your location. An optional flotation pouch allows the unit to float; secure the PLB to the pouch with the provided lanyard using self-locking knots, noting that the PLB does not float in an operating position inside the pouch.
